FEG | Chapter 21
Chapter 21, Eyes
The security guard uncle was pressed back by Sun Fangchi’s arm against his chest, his upper body tightly stuck to the wall, struggling. On the white wall beside his head, a bloodshot eye opened.
Sun Fangchi instantly forgot what he had been about to say.
The security guard uncle still did not know, and was still concentrating on fighting Sun Fangchi.
The eye on the wall rolled its eyeball and suddenly fixed on Sun Fangchi’s eyes.
“Fuck!” Sun Fangchi was startled, and the force suppressing the security guard abruptly relaxed. The security guard seized the chance to turn the tables.
“Huff——” The security guard grabbed Sun Fangchi’s upper arm and forcefully swung him, trying to swap positions with Sun Fangchi, but unexpectedly, he himself was unable to move at all!
However, Sun Fangchi was also distracted. After being thrown like that, he actually lost his balance and crashed into the wall.
This was bad!
In a crisis, Sun Fangchi came up with a quick idea. He tightly grabbed the security guard’s front lapels, lifted one long leg, and kicked the metal upper and lower bunk support pillar. His shin and the steel pipe collided, and that pain was no joke! Sun Fangchi gritted his teeth and endured it, barely stabilizing his body, his shoulder less than one centimeter from the wall.
“Huff!” Sun Fangchi let out a breath of relief after narrowly surviving, let go of the security guard, and stepped back.
The security guard uncle had already sensed that something was wrong. He grabbed Sun Fangchi’s wrists with both hands and would not let go, “Pull me out! Otherwise we’ll die together!”
Sun Fangchi was not about to just watch him die, so he tried to save him.
But even after he used all the strength he had, he still could not pull the security guard out even a fraction.
Feeling his body gradually being buried into the wall, the security guard uncle’s threat turned into a plea, “Save me... little brother, everything I did was at the developer’s request. I didn’t really mean to hit you, please save me, I don’t want to die...”
Sun Fangchi broke free of the security guard’s hands, took a step back, and stood in a place the security guard could not reach. For the first time, a cold, utterly indifferent expression appeared on his face: “Sorry, uncle, I’m nowhere near as kind as I look. Lately I’ve kept getting good-person cards, I almost started to believe I was really a good person.”
The security guard froze for a moment, then burst into curses, until he disappeared into the wall under Sun Fangchi’s indifferent gaze.
Sun Fangchi picked up the notebook that had fallen to the ground and flipped to the page with Huang Haoyu’s handwriting. 419 and the sales office, which should he go to first?
Following the nearest-priority principle, Sun Fangchi decided to go to the sales office first. Ignoring the disgusting eyes turning about on the wall, he pulled open the door to leave, and a small hand reached out to take his.
“You still want to follow me?” Sun Fangchi was surprised.
Yueyue did not make a sound, her stubborn behavior expressing her opinion.
“Suit yourself.” Sun Fangchi did not care much and took Yueyue with him to the sales office.
The glass door of the sales office was locked with a steel wire lock. Through the clean glass, he could see the reception area inside and the large sand table model, but he did not know where all the staff had gone.
Sun Fangchi lifted the lock and looked at it. A lock like this was not easy to open, and there was no suitable tool at hand, so he could not get in for the time being.
On the way back to the apartment, Sun Fangchi kept thinking about everything that had happened over the past two days.
The only thing he could be sure of right now was that the apartment walls ate people, and there was a tendency for it to get worse.
This did not surprise Sun Fangchi. From the first game, he had understood that danger would intensify with time. The way to clear it was to find routes that avoided danger, and to try his best to keep the number of times he encountered death threats lower than the number of times his soul weapon could protect him.
Compared with [Last Train], the frequency of vicious ghost attacks in this game was very low, and precisely because of that, Sun Fangchi could almost determine that the final 24 hours would definitely be fraught with danger.
However, even now, he still had not found a clear strategy.
The walls devoured people, so there must be a vicious ghost hiding inside them. The reason for that was not hard to imagine. But what were the causes of death for the security guard Huang Haoyu and the sales office manager?
Based on the current clues, Sun Fangchi believed Huang Haoyu had come to work as a security guard in order to investigate the truth behind the construction team’s disappearance years ago. He had several guesses.
First, the construction team back then was the vicious ghost now hidden in the walls, but that did not make sense. If Huang Haoyu had any connection with the construction team, then he should not have been attacked by the vicious ghost. So why did he die?
Second, Huang Haoyu had been scared to death by the vicious ghost. Then that meant the vicious ghost in the wall was not the construction team, but might be someone harmed by the construction team. Could it be someone on the developer’s side?
Sun Fangchi walked forward in thought, but Yueyue, who was holding his hand, refused to move.
“Hm? What’s wrong?” Sun Fangchi asked, puzzled.
Yueyue’s small body trembled, and the little hand holding Sun Fangchi’s pointed at the wall.
At some point, several blood-red eyes had opened on the walls near the two of them, their eyeballs rolling around, extremely disgusting.
Accompanied by some kind of slime being squeezed out, eyes of the same kind opened one after another on the walls, from near to far, nonstop and without pattern, covering the entire corridor.
A bizarre scene beyond imagination, enough to make even bold Sun Fangchi’s hairs stand on end.
Sun Fangchi glanced out of the corner of his eye, and the wall behind them was probably the same.
It truly was a predicament of being trapped between advance and retreat!
Thirty meters ahead was the elevator, and twenty meters behind was the apartment entrance, but the route required a turn in the middle.
Which way should he go?
Sun Fangchi thought quickly. The walls had changed, the apartment was no longer safe, and rushing outside might be better, but the game could not possibly have a bug that allowed players to avoid danger. Running out had a greater chance of getting killed.
Still, forward!
After Sun Fangchi made his decision, he no longer hesitated and took a step forward with Yueyue.
The wall’s countless eyes looked over in unison, and Yueyue immediately buried her head in the rag doll.
Sun Fangchi slowly exhaled, making ready to summon Bu Xiling at any time, and took a second step.
The eyes continued staring fixedly at him. No further strange phenomenon occurred, and Sun Fangchi also did not feel any sign of an attack. Just like that, he steeled himself and walked forward step by step. The short thirty meters felt as long as a century.
The elevator was already on the first floor. Sun Fangchi pressed the button, and the elevator doors opened immediately. Fortunately, there were no eyes inside the metal car.
Even so, Sun Fangchi still avoided touching the elevator’s metal walls.
Ding!
The elevator arrived at the fourth floor, and there was no abnormality in the corridor walls.
“Only the first floor?” Sun Fangchi could not figure it out, so he set the doubt aside for the time being and came to the door of room 419.
Sun Fangchi raised his hand and knocked on the door. A male voice inside answered, “Who is it?”
“Hello, I’m the resident of 414. I have something I’d like to ask you about.” Sun Fangchi said very politely.
The door was pulled open a crack. The person inside asked warily, “What do you want to ask? It’s you!”
Sun Fangchi was extremely surprised. The resident of 419 was the middle-aged fat man he had run into in the elevator. Sun Fangchi smiled warmly, “It’s you, what a coincidence!”
“Coincidence my ass!” The middle-aged fat man swore outright, “I almost got scared to death by you! What are you here for? Don’t tell me, could it be that my place has... has a dead person?”
The middle-aged fat man pulled the door open and was about to run. The psychological shadow Sun Fangchi had left him was simply too great. From now on, he would never take the elevator again.
“Don’t go, big brother, I really have something to ask.” Sun Fangchi quickly blocked him.
“Let go of me!” The middle-aged fat man went crazy, “You lunatic, don’t mess with me, I’m moving out today!”
Sun Fangchi glanced at the fat man’s home. There really was an open suitcase inside, and he was packing.
“Big brother, I mean no harm. Believe me, look, I’m so handsome, wouldn’t it be a waste if I went and did bad things!” Sun Fangchi said sincerely.
“...” The middle-aged fat man was actually at a loss for words. He turned back to look carefully at Sun Fangchi’s face and voiced a question from the depths of his soul, “Who gave you that confidence? How are you more handsome than me?”
Fine, he had met a worthy opponent...
Sun Fangchi wiped his face. “That’s not important. What’s important is that handsome guys like us shouldn’t waste our lives by going to be bad guys, right?”
The middle-aged fat man thought about it. “You make a lot of sense.”
“...Big brother, I just want to ask, were you familiar with Huang Haoyu?”
“We said a few words, why?” The middle-aged fat man confirmed there was no danger, then continued packing his luggage. “That kid was pretty good. What a pity he died. This apartment is evil, to scare a strong young man to death. I definitely can’t live here anymore...”
Sun Fangchi said, “What did Huang Haoyu usually like to talk to big brother about?”
The middle-aged fat man paused, then recalled, “Didn’t really talk about much. He kept asking me about what happened before the apartment building was finished. My ex-wife was a reporter, and she wrote news reports about this project before, about the construction team running off.”
Sun Fangchi’s heart stirred. “Big brother, then do you know the reason they ran off? Has it been found out now?”
The middle-aged fat man sighed, “How could it still be found? They embezzled the project’s construction money and used substandard building materials. If they were caught, they’d definitely be sentenced. Who would dare show their face?”
“Then where were they all from?”
“Who knows? I just remember the foreman’s surname was Huang.” The middle-aged fat man packed up his luggage, lit a cigarette for himself, and said, “I don’t have time to talk to you anymore, go quickly.”
Sun Fangchi and Yueyue were driven out by him. With a bang, the middle-aged fat man shut the door and dragged his suitcase into the elevator.
“Big brother, if the first floor is dangerous, I advise you to stay calm, don’t get out of the elevator, just come up directly.” Sun Fangchi reminded him.
The middle-aged fat man gave him a strange look and did not respond.
Sun Fangchi took out the key and returned to room 414. He stood by the window and looked down.
The middle-aged fat man must not have seen those creepy eyes on the first floor. He dragged his suitcase out of the apartment building, started a private car, and drove away into the distance.
Sun Fangchi stared tightly at that car.
Not long after the car drove out, it suddenly disappeared on the endless wasteland.
Sun Fangchi’s clenched hand relaxed. There was no escape route out of the apartment. They could only survive inside it.
At the same time, the four people staying in room 5 on the fifth floor were facing a huge test.
Earlier, the four of them had discussed whether or not to look for more clues. Because Bureau Chief Chen could not feel at ease leaving the two women alone, in the end it was 3 to 1, and they decided to return to the room.
Later, someone knocked on their door.
Zhou Xin looked through the peephole. Standing outside the door was unmistakably a familiar person, or rather, a familiar dead person.
It was the sales office manager Sun Fangchi had discovered in the elevator.
