WMR | Chapter 12
When Yan Shuyan saw Yan Jinzhou, his expression darkened even more. With a cold laugh, he said, “No wonder Old Master came. So someone caught a whiff of it. Truly a dog.”
Anyone could tell at once that he was cursing Yan Jinzhou.
Jiang Baiyu could not help frowning.
Old Master Yan and the others entered at a measured pace, heading straight for Yan Shuyan.
The old man looked at Jiang Baiyu kindly and said, “Little Yu is here too.”
Jiang Baiyu obediently and politely stepped forward and said, “Hello, Old Master Yan. How is your health?”
“Good, very good.”
Old Master Yan took his hand and chuckled. “Me, I thought you were a lucky child the moment I first laid eyes on you. After I saw you that day, I was even able to stand up on my own that very night.”
“So I had someone check your birth chart, and sure enough, your fate is a blessing to our Yan family.”
As he spoke, the old man specially instructed the Yan children beside him, saying, “So you must treat our benefactor well.”
They knew the old man was getting on in years and, on certain matters, could be stubborn and muddle-headed. Finding a benefactor, checking fate and all that, at a glance it was obvious the old man was being superstitious. But no one dared object. They could only obediently and politely treat Jiang Baiyu well.
Jiang Baiyu waved it off with a smile. “No, no, it’s because your health is good. What blessing could I possibly have?”
Yan Shuran ran over from a distance, holding onto her grandfather’s wheelchair with an intimate look and said, “Grandpa, I was the one who invited Jiang Baiyu today. I go to the same school as him. Jiang Baiyu is friends with my brother too.”
As she spoke, the girl winked and asked, “Right? Jiang Baiyu.”
It seemed she was deliberately trying to draw closer to him in front of Old Master Yan.
Jiang Baiyu’s eyelashes trembled slightly. He finally understood why the Yan siblings had suddenly tried to curry favor with him. That was probably also why the Yan family wanted a marriage alliance with the Jiang family.
The boy gave a subtle nod and said, “Yes, I go to the same school as the young lady, and we’ve met before.”
As he spoke, his eyes could not help drifting toward Yan Jinzhou, who was pushing the wheelchair.
Unexpectedly, Yan Jinzhou was also looking at him, and their gazes collided without warning.
The man had very beautiful eyes, a pair of lovely peach blossom eyes. The corners of them tilted up slightly, and his pupils were hazy with a faint trace of a smile, intoxicating to look at.
Jiang Baiyu looked at him on purpose and said, “That day on the school field, thank you for saving me.”
“It was nothing.”
Yan Jinzhou curved his lips slightly and asked, “Has Young Master Jiang recovered?”
His voice was as magnetic and gentle as it had been in Jiang Baiyu’s memory, pleasant to hear.
The boy looked at his smiling eyes and answered with a smile too, “Much better already, thank you.”
Yan Jinzhou said, “That’s good. Exercise should also be in moderation, and you should not push yourself too hard.”
The boy said, “Mm, I’ll be careful from now on.”
Just a few simple exchanges between them immediately made Yan Shuyan wary. He shot them a cold look.
Old Master Yan turned back in confusion. “Jinzhou, you know each other?”
Jiang Baiyu explained, “Last week I fainted from heatstroke while running at school. It was the second young master who saved me. He also sent me to the school infirmary.”
“Last week?”
The old man thought about it and said thoughtfully, “That should have been before my birthday banquet.”
Yan Jinzhou bent slightly and said softly to the old man, “It was exactly when you asked me to go to the school to attend the school celebration. That was when I met the Jiang family’s young master.”
“Mm.”
A satisfied smile appeared in Old Master Yan’s cloudy eyes. “You did well.”
Then he looked sternly at Yan Shuyan and said, “That is why I teach you to do good deeds and help others with humility in your daily life, so that those around you can trust you. If your mind is crooked and you care only about profit, who would still want to confide in you?”
Yan Shuyan could not fail to understand what Old Master Yan meant. He shot Yan Jinzhou a vicious glare and said through clenched teeth, “Grandpa, you’re right.”
The lively young people around them all heard this and very tactfully fell silent.
Old Master Yan raised his hand and called to Jiang Baiyu. “You young people are all at the age where you should be working hard. Tomorrow, go to school if you should go to school, work if you should work. Don’t stay out too late today. When the time comes, go home and rest.”
Yan Shuran looked a little put out. “Grandpa, we weren’t planning to play too late anyway. Don’t worry, I’ll go see the guests out right away.”
Watching his granddaughter turn and leave, Old Master Yan sighed quietly and said, “Little Yu, you should go home too. You’re a senior in high school now, and your classes should be heavy. Go back to school and study hard.”
Yan Shuyan quickly stepped forward and said, “Grandpa, then I’ll take Young Master Jiang home.”
As he spoke, he also called to Jiang Baiyu. “Little Yu, come on, I’ll drive you home.”
Jiang Baiyu stood where he was without moving, and looked toward Old Master Yan in tentative inquiry.
“You stay. I have something to say to you.”
Old Master Yan turned and instructed Yan Jinzhou, “Jinzhou, see the Jiang family child off. Remember to send him home safely.”
Yan Jinzhou released the wheelchair handle and bent down to say to Old Master Yan, “Please rest assured. I will definitely send Young Master Jiang home safely.”
Yet the corner of his slender eyes drifted, faintly and unmistakably, toward Yan Shuyan, and he deliberately emphasized the word ‘safely.’
Yan Shuyan still refused to give up. With a smile, he said, “Grandpa, since I invited him here, let my people be responsible for sending Young Master Jiang home.”
As he spoke, he gave a gesture, signaling two bodyguards to come over and take Jiang Baiyu.
Jiang Baiyu’s slender body leaned closer to Old Master Yan, standing beside Yan Jinzhou as if asking for help.
Old Master Yan merely shot him a cold glance. The two bodyguards immediately stopped moving to escort the boy away and stood respectfully to the side, not daring to budge.
Yan Shuyan touched his nose in discomfort.
Yan Jinzhou lowered his eyes to look at the boy depending on him beside him, and with a gentle curve to those beautiful eyes said, “Young Master Jiang, I’ll take you home.”
The man’s expression was gentle, and his manner elegant and refined. Just like when he had held him that day, he gave off a warm feeling that put people at ease.
Jiang Baiyu kept nodding.
