DT |Chapter 23: Floating Duckweed Part 2
Sheng Feng couldn’t help but think of the thin man who had been appearing in his dreams lately. Ever since the red light saved his life, Sheng Feng had been able to find him in his dreams, but he had never seen the man’s face, nor could he remember if he had ever met him.
Shen Yan took something out of his pocket, finally drawing Sheng Feng’s attention back. It was the broken blood jade they had obtained from Chu Xiao.
Sheng Feng straightened up to grab it. “What are you doing? Give it back to me!”
Shen Yan smiled. “Where did you get this ominous thing? Captain Sheng, you deal with us so-called dirty things all year round, and your body is already heavy with yin energy. Carrying a thousand-year-old blood jade with you, are you really planning to report to the Underworld?”
Sheng Feng was annoyed not because Shen Yan took the blood jade, but because he had rummaged through his things while he was asleep.
Shen Yan leaned in closer. “You’re becoming more and more interesting, Sheng Feng.”
Sheng Feng snatched the blood jade from his hand, clenched it tightly, turned sideways to get out of bed, and freed himself from Shen Yan’s hold. He silently tidied up his half-open clothes, put on a coat, and wrapped himself up tightly.
“The scar on my neck has been there since birth, it’s not man-made.”
Shen Yan’s eyes first showed teasing, then endless amusement.
Sheng Feng spoke calmly, “As for the red light, I don’t know what it is or where it came from. After the red light was released, my body inexplicably became weak, and I even started feeling drowsy.”
Shen Yan leaned against the wall, holding the cup of soy milk he had fed Sheng Feng earlier.
Sheng Feng caught a glimpse of it out of the corner of his eye, and even someone as thick-skinned as him felt a wave of embarrassment and anger.
Shen Yan lazily said, “And the blood jade? Where did you get such a thing? You don’t care for the jade I gave you, but you carry around this unlucky item.”
Sheng Feng sighed, realizing he didn’t have the talent for lying, especially not to someone as cunning as Shen Yan. He had only managed to keep it a secret for less than a week before it was completely exposed, so he had no choice but to tell Shen Yan the origin of the blood jade.
Shen Yan played with the blood jade in his hand. In the sunlight, the blood threads inside the jade were clearly visible.
He said nonchalantly, “The jade is good, in the Xiyi Realm it’s at most a medium-grade item, but if it caught the eye of a Corpse-Wrapping Array, there must be something extraordinary about it.”
Sheng Feng said, “This thing was dug out from Zhulong Slope, which used to be a chaotic graveyard with countless buried dead. It’s impossible to trace.”
Shen Yan continued to hold the broken jade, its cool texture refreshing, not at all like the ominous object of legend.
Suddenly, Shen Yan exclaimed and sat up. “Sheng Feng, come here, look at this.”
Sheng Feng took two steps to his side and looked in the direction he pointed. Under the direct sunlight, a beautiful pattern faintly appeared in the center of the jade, becoming clearer in the light—a blooming lotus.
Shen Yan murmured, “…Twin Lotus, I think I’ve seen this pattern somewhere before.”
Sheng Feng was slightly dazed. He was all too familiar with this pattern.
The silver collar worn by the person in his dream was engraved with the exact same Twin Lotus as on this jade!
But this time, Sheng Feng suppressed the wild beating of his heart. Why could he dream of that person? That person might very well be the owner of this jade, or perhaps the Twin Lotus was just a symbolic totem, and the person in the dream must have a significant connection to this totem.
Sheng Feng forcefully concealed his shock, took out his phone, and pretended to calmly take a photo of the lotus on the jade, then sent it to his mentor, Huang Rongxin.
Huang Rongxin, usually carefree and unkempt, was actually a man of great depth and insight, with profound knowledge of feng shui and the like, and was especially skilled in drawing talismans and setting up arrays.
Huang Rongxin was busy with something, and it wasn’t until noon, when Sheng Feng had packed up and was ready to board the long-distance bus home, that he finally replied.
Shen Yan got on the bus and fell asleep immediately, while Sheng Feng took out his phone to carefully read the reply.
Huang Rongxin: “You little rascal, whose grave did you dig up this time?! I warn you, we’re of the same sect, and it might be our ancestor buried there. You better not dig up our ancestral graves!”
Sheng Feng replied, “I didn’t dig up anyone’s ancestral grave. This was given to me by a friend, said to be a thousand-year-old jade. Can you help me identify the pattern and determine which dynasty it’s from?”
Huang Rongxin was even more annoyed: “I told you to study more, and now you’re at your wit’s end! You little rascal, you don’t even recognize our ancestor’s things. Don’t say you’re my disciple when you go out!”
Sheng Feng: “…”
Huang Rongxin: “Isn’t this the Twin Lotus of Mengliang Yuchanfeng? I showed it to you when you first came to train with National Security. Do you remember?”
Mengliang Yuchanfeng, the name awakened memories from many years ago for Sheng Feng. Huang Rongxin was right; he had indeed shown him ancient books related to Mengliang Yuchanfeng when Sheng Feng first trained.
Over two thousand years ago, Mengliang gathered hundreds of different feng shui families, and “Yuchanfeng” was one of them, the most renowned among the hundreds.
Every time a severe drought or heatwave hit, the king of Mengliang would respectfully invite the master of Yuchanfeng to perform rain rituals. Mengliang enjoyed years of favorable weather and prosperity, and the king attributed this to Yuchanfeng, making it famous for a time.
Huang Rongxin sent another message: “Seeing the Twin Lotus totem nowadays truly surprises me. This feng shui sect, which was glorious for over a hundred years, is now barely remembered.”
Sheng Feng was puzzled: “The techniques you taught me, aren’t they from Yuchanfeng?”
Huang Rongxin: “Of course not. The real Yuchanfeng formations were lost a thousand years ago. When King Yan took power, Yuchanfeng became part of the court, and the sect was already in name only. After that, it was only a matter of time before Yuchanfeng was exterminated.”
Sheng Feng was shocked: “Yuchanfeng was exterminated?! How could a feng shui sect end up being exterminated?”
Huang Rongxin laughed: “Yuchanfeng stood too close to royal power, its fame rivaling the king’s. Naturally, King Yan wanted to eliminate it quickly. But the history books say it was because the 30th sect leader, Shen Zhuyao, attempted a coup and failed…”
Sheng Feng had never been interested in history, and he had only skimmed through ancient books. The unfamiliar names in them had never caught his attention, but now he found it somewhat interesting.
Then Huang Rongxin’s words became a bit strange: “Actually, I know quite a bit about this rebellious sect leader. I wonder if you’d like to hear it.”
Sheng Feng rolled his eyes dramatically: “You’re just teasing me. If you don’t want to tell, then forget it.”
Huang Rongxin seemed to have found an outlet for his stories and immediately started talking: “No, no, no, can’t you be nicer to your shifu? Actually, Yuchanfeng truly flourished under this 30th sect leader. Shen Zhuyao was a master of inherited feng shui knowledge, considered half our ancestor, and was even granted the title of National Master. It’s just a pity he befriended a scoundrel like King Yan. Their youthful friendship is quite lamentable!”
Sheng Feng couldn’t help but laugh. If there was one historical figure his shifu Huang Rongxin despised the most, it was probably King Yan of Mengliang. Who knows how that person offended him, as he never had a good word to say about him.
Shen Yan seemed to hear him laugh, turned over, and continued to sleep. The bus was not as comfortable as a bed, so Shen Yan curled up and leaned against Sheng Feng, burying his head in Sheng Feng’s arms without moving.
Sheng Feng’s arm was tightly held by him, half his body pressed down. Sheng Feng wanted to wake him up, but since many people around were sleeping, he had to let this silly dog rub against him.
Shen Yan murmured as if in a dream, “So soft.”
At this moment, Sheng Feng could only grit his teeth.
The journey there had been full of twists and turns, but the return was smooth sailing. Just as Sheng Feng was about to pull his luggage home, he saw a familiar figure standing at the entrance of his building. The man was dressed in a suit, looking dignified.
Sheng Feng waved at him. “Yan Ting, how did you know I was coming back today?”
Yan Ting smiled and took the suitcase from his hand. “Teacher Huang called me, so I came to your building right away. I didn’t expect you to arrive so early. You ungrateful guy, I sent you messages, and you didn’t even reply.”
Suddenly, a voice chimed in: “Why does Captain Sheng have to reply to your messages?”
Sheng Feng almost forgot about the silly dog behind him, who had just woken up and was still grumpy. Shen Yan’s hair was a bit messy from sleeping, and he started spouting nonsense as soon as he got off the bus.
Yan Ting looked at Shen Yan. “And who is this?”
Shen Yan’s arrogant and domineering aura was about to show, but Sheng Feng quickly pinched him to interrupt. “A colleague, just joined National Security not long ago.”
Yan Ting made an “oh” sound. “So, an intern.”
Shen Yan sensed a great deal of disdain in his words, and his gaze became a bit dangerous. Seeing this, Sheng Feng quickly tried to smooth things over. Yan Ting helped him carry his luggage upstairs and into the house.
Back home, Shen Yan’s grumpiness had mostly dissipated, but he still didn’t like Yan Ting. He felt like there was a cockroach in the clean and tidy room, and personally thought that some doormen should just leave after their job was done.
Sheng Feng went to the kitchen to pour Yan Ting a cup of hot tea. There wasn’t much tea left, so he opened a can of White Hair Silver Needle. But before he could pour it, Shen Yan snatched it away.
Sheng Feng frowned. “What are you doing?”
Shen Yan said, “Why should he drink my tea? Such good tea would be wasted on him.”
Sheng Feng tried to take back the tea. “He’s my childhood friend, don’t be so hostile to him. Besides, he helped carry my luggage upstairs.”
Shen Yan held the tea tightly. “Who cares if he carried it? He ran over here willingly to be a porter. I could have carried your luggage up myself.”
Sheng Feng rubbed his forehead. What a damn competitive spirit!
