WHV | Chapter 16
Yu Wei’s eyes were already swollen and red from crying, his wet gaze misty with tears. Shi Ciyan wiped the tears from the corners of his eyes with his thumb and said softly, “You don’t need to tell me any of this. Get some good sleep. I’ll go tidy up the living room.”
Shi Ciyan tucked him in properly, then slipped out of the bedroom on tiptoe. Yu Wei was already exhausted from what had happened at noon. He closed his eyes and, before long, fell into a deep sleep. When he woke up in the evening, Shi Ciyan was still there, and had even prepared another full table of dishes. Yu Wei had slept all afternoon and didn’t feel very hungry, but he was still forced to drink a small bowl of black-bone chicken soup.
“Is it good?” Shi Ciyan sat across from him, eyes fixed on him expectantly.
“Pretty good. Are you going back later?”
Shi Ciyan hesitated for a few seconds, looking at Yu Wei’s thin little face. “Ge, do you need a nanny who can cook?”
“Cough—” Yu Wei nearly choked. “What do you mean?”
“I can cook, clean rooms, and do laundry. Last month I finally found a part-time job at a bar, but that bar went under. I don’t know where to look now.”
Yu Wei didn’t need one, but seeing how pitiful he looked, he couldn’t bear to refuse outright. Still, he really didn’t need Shi Ciyan to be his nanny.
Let the protagonist come be his nanny? He wasn’t tired of living yet.
“I live too far from your school, so it wouldn’t be convenient for you. Besides, I’m at the company all day, and I basically eat out anyway.”
“I really can’t find work,” Shi Ciyan lowered his eyes, his voice dull and pitiful. “Then do you need an assistant? I can do anything.”
Yu Wei: “…”
He already had seven or eight assistants. He really didn’t need one. And Nanda wasn’t all that close to the company either.
But if Shi Ciyan really couldn’t find work, having him come to the company as an assistant didn’t seem bad. Better than being his nanny. He already had so many assistants. One more wouldn’t matter.
“Then come be an assistant. Just follow the internship requirements, work three days a week, and the monthly salary is 4,500.”
Shi Ciyan’s eyes lit up. “Okay, I’ll start tomorrow.”
Yu Wei had told him to work three days a week, but whenever he didn’t have class, Shi Ciyan ran to the company. He was incredibly enthusiastic about work. Shi Ciyan was bursting with energy every day, running to Yu Wei’s office ten times an hour, while Yu Wei himself got tired and dizzy after reading files for just ten minutes.
Yu Wei rubbed the bridge of his nose and called his assistant to bring him coffee.
“Xiao Yu, help me make a cup of coffee. Don’t let Shi Ciyan see it.” Ever since Shi Ciyan started working, his freedom to drink coffee had been stripped away.
Yu Wei waited ten minutes, and the office door was pushed open. “Shi Ciyan didn’t see it… why did you come in?” Yu Wei shot a glare at Shi Ciyan, who came in carrying a glass of milk. “I asked Xiao Yu for it.”
“Sister Xiao Yu had something to do.” Shi Ciyan set the milk beside him. “The temperature is just right.”
Yu Wei clicked his tongue, picked up the milk, and drank it all. He still wanted a cup of coffee to perk himself up.
“Didn’t sleep well last night?” Shi Ciyan moved behind him and silently massaged him. “If looking at files is tiring, then don’t look anymore. Rest for a while.”
Shi Ciyan’s massage was gentle, and Yu Wei narrowed his eyes in comfort. His insomnia had improved a little some time ago, but recently it had started again, and it was even worse. Before, he could at least take some melatonin and barely fall asleep. Now melatonin didn’t work at all, and he could only force himself to endure it.
“You’ve lost so much weight again. Why not go to the hospital and get checked? I’ll go with you.”
Yu Wei’s appetite had been poor, and he was growing thinner by the day. This was not the first time Shi Ciyan had told him to go to the hospital, but Yu Wei hadn’t taken it seriously. He had only thought that being disgusted by Lin Zerui had left him with psychological trauma, which was why he couldn’t sleep or eat. It would get better after a while.
Shi Ciyan massaged him for a bit, then his secretary came in to relay a message that Lin Hao had come to see him and was already waiting in the conference room.
If nothing had gone wrong, cooperation between the Lin family and the Yu family would have already been finalized, but the day Lin Zerui had forced himself on him had remained a thorn in Yu Wei’s heart. He couldn’t even look at Lin Hao favorably anymore, and he no longer wanted to cooperate with the Lin family.
He had talked it over with his father, and had not expected his father to not want cooperation with the Lin family either. The reason they had agreed before was entirely because his father liked Lin Zerui.
Fortunately, the contract had not yet been signed. Yu Wei immediately contacted Lin Hao to cancel the cooperation. Lin Hao was probably here today for that very reason.
“All right, stop massaging. I’ll go take a look.” Yu Wei opened his eyes and patted Shi Ciyan’s hand, then stood up and straightened his clothes. “Go on with your work.”
Shi Ciyan said, “Don’t secretly drink coffee.”
Yu Wei glared at him. “I’m your boss.”
Shi Ciyan immediately changed his tune. “Boss, please don’t secretly drink coffee. It’s bad for your health.”
Yu Wei: “…”
He snorted and strode out of the office toward the conference room. In the conference room were Lin Hao and his assistant. He hadn’t even brought Lin Zerui over to play the family card. How rare.
The moment Yu Wei entered, Lin Hao stood up. “Xiao Wei, you’ve lost so much weight.”
Yu Wei secretly rolled his eyes. “President Lin, there’s no need to be so familiar.”
Even though the engagement between the Yu and Lin families was still in place, Yu Wei didn’t want to be polite to him anymore. Once he found a legitimate reason, this engagement would be canceled. But that reason had to make him the victim and Lin Zerui the one at fault, and it couldn’t affect the company’s development when the engagement was canceled.
Lin Zerui had been playing around before. Yu Wei knew about those things, but he had never left evidence. Some time ago, in order to find proof, he sent people to tail Lin Zerui. He hadn’t expected that Lin Zerui had either been in the hospital recently or holed up at home and refused to come out. He hadn’t gone out to play, and Yu Wei had spent more than half a month working for nothing, not getting a single photo.
As long as he got a few photos of Lin Zerui fooling around, he would have a reason to call off the engagement without affecting the company’s stock.
“Xiao Wei, I heard from Zerui. The two of you had a little conflict, and I already reprimanded Zerui. He won’t do that again. Don’t let this affect our cooperation. In the end, you’ll still be family.”
“Canceling cooperation isn’t just being petty.” Yu Wei sat down, undid the buttons on his jacket, and said carelessly, “This cooperation needs to start from scratch, beginning with evaluating your company.”
There were many pharmacies on the market that wanted to work with them. By the time he had come into this body, the Yu and Lin families had already reached the stage of signing the contract, so Yu Wei had only taken over from the draft-contract stage. But now, setting aside everything else, the Lin family was just one option. Compared with other pharmacies, though, the Lin family had a higher reputation and was still the Yu family’s best choice.
Yu Wei set aside his personal grudges and still put the Lin family first. But since he had taken over midway and didn’t know the Lin company’s development status, he wanted this cooperation to start over.
Lin Hao gave an awkward smile. “Xiao Wei, we’re already this close. Don’t you trust me?”
Yu Wei smiled but said nothing, the meaning obvious.
After seeing Lin Hao out, Yu Wei returned to the office and immediately asked his secretary for the Lin family pharmacy’s previous annual report. During their conversation just now, Lin Hao had clearly panicked, and Yu Wei felt there was something fishy about it.
He looked through it twice. Aside from a slightly large accounts payable balance, there were no suspicious points. Yu Wei wanted to read it once more when his stomach suddenly clenched violently, as if it had been seized hard by an invisible hand. Yu Wei immediately ran into the bathroom and bent over the toilet, vomiting out the milk he had drunk an hour earlier.
When Shi Ciyan came looking for Yu Wei, the door to his lounge was wide open, and waves of vomiting could be heard from the bathroom. Shi Ciyan frowned slightly and set down the fruit he had just cut before walking in.
Yu Wei was kneeling on the floor, vomiting so hard that the world seemed to spin, and he hadn’t even noticed someone had come in. Shi Ciyan took a bottle of water and walked over to gently pat his back.
After he was done vomiting, Yu Wei was a little weak. Shi Ciyan caught his unsteady body and helped him rinse his mouth and stand up. “Brother Yu Wei, let me carry you over.”
Yu Wei’s face was deathly pale. Shi Ciyan lifted him up at once and put him on the bed in the lounge. Then he went to the bathroom, soaked a towel in hot water, and wiped the sweat from Yu Wei’s face and neck.
“Brother Yu Wei, let’s go to the hospital. I’ll go with you.”
Yu Wei closed his eyes and lay there for a long while. After some strength returned to his body, he said, “Okay. I’ll go take a look on the weekend.”
Shi Ciyan didn’t say anything else, his gaze falling on Yu Wei’s lower abdomen. If it had happened that time, then it would be eleven weeks now. You couldn’t tell through his clothes.
Yu Wei still couldn’t eat anything that night. He was busy on workdays, but his stomach problem was getting worse and worse, and Shi Ciyan kept reminding him to go to the hospital. No matter what, it would be best to go take a look on Saturday.
After work that night, Yu Wei dragged his exhausted body home and lay on the sofa for a while before getting up to shower. He took off his shirt. In the mirror, his body was so thin that his bones were clearly visible, but…
Yu Wei touched his lower abdomen and felt that something was off.
Over the past two months, he had been able to eat very little every day, so he had lost weight rapidly. The little bit of muscle on his body was gone too, leaving only a skeleton. But only the belly that had been flat half a month ago was now faintly bulging. The change wasn’t big, but with him being this thin, having a belly was rather strange.
Yu Wei turned sideways, and the bulge on his stomach became even more obvious.
A beer belly from sitting too much?
He hadn’t been going to the gym lately, but he shouldn’t have gotten a beer belly, right?
Or was it a tumor?
Putting together the vomiting, the insomnia, the stomach discomfort, and now the swelling in his abdomen, could it be a tumor?
The moment Yu Wei thought of that possibility, he couldn’t sit still anymore. At first, he had assumed he was just disgusted by Lin Zerui. Later, when it got worse and worse, he thought it was stomach trouble. Eating bland food and drinking hot water should help relieve it, so when Shi Ciyan wouldn’t let him drink coffee, he obediently drank hot water or milk instead.
Now that he looked at it, his body had grown lean everywhere except for his belly, and that made him have to be on guard.
He barely slept at all that night. As soon as dawn broke the next day, Yu Wei got dressed and headed straight for the hospital.
He couldn’t wait until Saturday anymore.
At the city center hospital, Yu Wei booked a full physical exam and scheduled every test he could.
That took him the whole morning. Aside from the items that required waiting three days or more, most of the results could basically be known by two in the afternoon. Yu Wei didn’t go back to the company at noon. He found a restaurant near the hospital, ate a couple of bites, and then went to the bathroom to vomit everything back up. He didn’t know if it was psychological, but Yu Wei always felt like there was something in his stomach.
At two in the afternoon, Yu Wei went to the front desk on time to ask. The nurse told him that the physical exam report had to be collected in paper form from the comprehensive office at the very end of the second floor, or he could look at the electronic version on the app.
Yu Wei waited there for more than half an hour. Looking at the electronic version, he couldn’t make sense of whether those numbers were good or bad, so he went up to the second floor to find the office and get the paper report from the doctor while asking about the situation.
There was a long line on the second floor, and Yu Wei stood at the back. The line moved fairly quickly. Most people just took their reports, confirmed that nothing was wrong with their bodies, and left. It didn’t take much time.
Ten minutes later, the girl in front of Yu Wei went in. He stood at the door, uneasy, his heart pounding.
“Next one.”
The office door opened from the inside. After the girl in front of them came out, a voice sounded from inside.
Yu Wei went in, gave his ID number, and the doctor entered it, found the report, and printed it out. After casually glancing over it a couple of times, he didn’t even lift his head. “Too thin, a bit malnourished.”
“My appetite’s been bad lately. I can’t eat much, and if I do eat, I throw it up.”
The doctor’s expression was flat, as if this was nothing unusual. “That’s normal. It’s always like that at the beginning.”
Yu Wei was a little stunned. Was long-term loss of appetite normal?
“Doctor, is my stomach really fine? My appetite’s bad, I can’t sleep, and my stomach also…”
The doctor pushed his glasses up the bridge of his nose. “Nothing serious. Your morning sickness is just more severe than other people’s. Get through the first three months and it’ll be fine.”
“Morning sickness?” Yu Wei frowned slightly, his face full of disbelief.
Only then did the doctor look up. “You didn’t know you were pregnant?”
Yu Wei’s mind went blank. “Who’s pregnant?”
The doctor said, “You are.”
Yu Wei asked in disbelief, “What about me?”
The doctor said impatiently, “You’re pregnant.”
Yu Wei repeated it blankly, pointing at himself with his index finger. “I’m pregnant?”
The doctor said, “Yes, you’re pregnant. Judging from the indicators, it should be around two months. Go to obstetrics and gynecology for a more detailed examination.”
Yu Wei stared speechlessly at this young doctor and reminded him, “Doctor, my name is Yu Wei. I’m male. Look again and see if you got the report wrong.”
“It’s not wrong, it’s yours.” The doctor put the report in front of him. The name and sex were correct.
“So what you mean is that there’s a child in my stomach, not a tumor. I vomited because of morning sickness, not because of stomach disease?” Yu Wei looked at his phone to confirm that today wasn’t April Fools’ Day either. “I’m a man. Compared with saying I’m pregnant, it would be more believable if you told me I had a terminal illness.”
Doctor: “…”
Seeing that he didn’t speak, Yu Wei grew even more confident. “If I really am pregnant, then tell me how this child came to be. How can a man get pregnant?”
“Even if precautions were taken during sex, contraception isn’t one hundred percent effective.”
Yu Wei looked at the doctor, who was about the same age as him, talking at him in words he didn’t understand, and for a moment his brain couldn’t react.
Was the focus now whether contraception was effective?
Shouldn’t the focus be how a man could get pregnant? He didn’t even have a uterus, so how was he supposedly uniquely talented enough to get pregnant in his stomach?
Wasn’t that creepy?
Yu Wei couldn’t hold back his temper for a moment. “Brother, how did you even become a doctor? Did you study biology? A man like me doesn’t have the function to get pregnant, do you know that?”
Work was already miserable enough, and now he had run into a stupid doctor too. The doctor was also getting annoyed, and pointed at the sex field, the small line of English under the word male. “Then did you go to high school biology? It’s perfectly normal for an Omega to get pregnant. It’s not like you’re an Alpha or a Beta. Do you really need to make such a fuss?”
Yu Wei stiffened his neck and glared at him. “What Omega, Alpha, Beta? My physics teacher never taught me that symbols like Ω, α, and β could get pregnant. Besides, why can Ω get pregnant but α and β can’t? What, symbol discrimination?”
The doctor was left speechless by the retort. For a moment, he couldn’t tell whether Yu Wei had gone to school or not. If he had, how could he not know that Omegas had reproductive cavities and could get pregnant through sex? If he hadn’t, then his grasp of physics symbols was actually pretty complete.
In the end, the doctor let out a heavy sigh. “Your physical exam is missing one item. I recommend getting it checked.”
Yu Wei paused. “What item?”
“The brain.”
