The Engagement Was Canceled

Yu Wei started looking for a place to rent the next day, but with the language barrier, he ran into a wall everywhere he turned. Ling Heyu was busy during the day too, so Yu Wei barely saw him around and didn’t dare keep bothering him.

He kept coming home later and later. When he got back that day, Ling Heyu was already home and fussing over something in the kitchen.

Ling Heyu didn’t look all that reliable, but his cooking was actually pretty good. Hearing the noise, he stuck his head out of the kitchen and said, “I braised some beef. Wash your hands and eat.”

Yu Wei took off his coat and went into his room to change into loungewear. By the time he came out, the dishes were already on the table, and he didn’t even need to help.

He had been here for almost two weeks, and the meals on the table basically never repeated. Every day, there was meat and vegetables, three dishes and a soup. Ling Heyu was not an OB-GYN, but he knew more than an ordinary person, and he had a certain understanding of how to support a pregnancy.

“Eat more beef. It’s good for iron.”

Yu Wei picked up two pieces of meat. “Thanks.”

Ling Heyu clicked his tongue, showing his displeasure at hearing him say thank you again. After a while, he asked, “Are you short on money?”

“No.” Right now, he had nothing, except money.

“Then why are you looking for a place yourself? Just hire someone, tell them exactly what you want, and have them run around for you. You’re only three months pregnant, and you’re out every day. Aren’t you afraid something will happen?”

Yu Wei blanked out for a few seconds. Well… actually, he really had to say it, he was used to being careful with money in his previous life. Even after becoming a young master in this one, he still hadn’t shaken the habit. If he didn’t need to spend money, he wouldn’t.

He realized, belatedly, that he was actually a miser.

Looking for a place himself was far too inefficient. He had no choice but to spend the money. Yu Wei said, “I’ll go look again tomorrow.”

“No need to look anymore.” Ling Heyu tossed out the line casually. “My neighbor is selling his place. I bought it for you.”

Yu Wei froze. “When did that happen?”

“This afternoon. We’ll go take a look after dinner.”

“Okay.” Yu Wei responded, and just as he was about to say thank you, Ling Heyu stopped him.

“You can’t brush me off with just one thank you. Ever since you got here, I’m sick of hearing those two words.”

Yu Wei: “…Then how do you want me to thank you?”

Ling Heyu pretended to think for a few seconds. “Tsk, you’ve stumped me. Let me think.”

The two of them finished dinner, and Ling Heyu still hadn’t come up with how Yu Wei should thank him.

As Yu Wei cleared the table, he said, “Too late now.”

Ling Heyu said, “No way. You owe me one first.”

After they finished cleaning the kitchen, they went next door to look at the place. The layout was almost the same as Ling Heyu’s apartment, and in every respect it matched Yu Wei’s requirements.

It wasn’t a new house, but there was no need to worry about safety. The entire place was already mostly furnished, so he could move in with just his bags. Even so, Yu Wei still spent a week redecorating it in the style he liked.

He hadn’t brought much from back home. Clothes could be bought anywhere, so he hadn’t brought any just to weigh himself down. He only needed to move over the clothes and daily necessities Ling Heyu had prepared for him.

“You stay here and sort things out. I’ll go get the rest for you.”

Yu Wei didn’t have much stuff, so Ling Heyu made two trips and brought everything over. He stayed beside him and watched him organize the wardrobe.

“Hey, where did this coat come from?” Ling Heyu suddenly stood up and picked up the coat hanging on the bed. He sniffed it, then asked uncertainly, “Does this coat have Alpha pheromones, or is my nose acting up?”

Yu Wei turned back and saw the black coat in his hands. He immediately rushed over, snatched it away, and shoved it into the wardrobe at random. “Your nose is acting up.”

Ling Heyu let out an oh. “It’s a bit long. If I wore it, would it fit me just right?”

With his back to him, Yu Wei’s expression was a little unnatural. “It fits me just right. I like longer coats. You can’t wear it.”

Ling Heyu didn’t suspect anything. He left only after Yu Wei was almost done packing up.

Yu Wei had been busy for several days and finally had a chance to rest. He checked the time. It was two in the afternoon here, a little after nine at night back home, and Bai Sijia probably wasn’t asleep yet.

Perfect for a phone call. He had been too busy these past few days to find the time, and they hadn’t contacted each other for two or three days already.

Yu Wei took out his phone and dialed. The call connected the second it rang, and Bai Sijia’s voice came through. “You haven’t called these past few days, and I’ve been doing nothing all day except sitting around waiting for your call.”

He smiled and explained that he had been too busy these days.

Except for not calling these past two days, he had basically called on time every day. Their conversations were always similar. Bai Sijia would dutifully ask whether he had eaten well, drunk well, slept well, and whether he had enough money.

With Chef Ling Heyu around, his food was almost no different from what he ate back in China. As for sleep, he wasn’t having insomnia anymore. On the contrary, he had become sleepy all the time and fell asleep as soon as he hit the bed.

Money was even less of a worry. Bai Sijia always told him to spend boldly. Your dad doesn’t have many strengths, but he makes money fast. The spending speed of our family of four can’t even keep up with the money-making speed of one person.

By the end of the call, Yu Wei was always hesitant, trying to ask whether anything had happened recently.

But today, unexpectedly, before he could even ask, Bai Sijia brought up Lin Zerui first.

“Your engagement with him has already been canceled by your dad. They’ve had several media outlets report it these past two days.” Bai Sijia’s tone had usually carried some room for discussion whenever she mentioned it, but today she was unusually firm, directly making the decision for him.

If Bai Sijia hadn’t mentioned it, he’d almost forgotten he had been engaged to that piece of trash. He naturally was willing to cancel the engagement, but he also didn’t want this matter to affect the company, so he had dragged it out again and again until now.

Why had it suddenly been canceled now, and why wasn’t it in a tone of discussion anymore? Yu Wei couldn’t help asking, “Why so suddenly? Is the Lin family okay with it?”

“That family’s face.” Bai Sijia’s disgust was impossible to hide.

Yu Wei vaguely smelled something unusual. “What happened? Did something happen to him?”

The other end of the line immediately went quiet, as if she was hesitating over how to tell him. Half a minute passed before Bai Sijia sighed. “It’s better if you don’t know about this filthy mess. Just remember that you and he have nothing to do with each other anymore.”

No matter how Yu Wei asked, Bai Sijia only kept sighing and refused to explain clearly. It immediately hooked his curiosity. He cleaned the apartment to distract himself and spent the whole afternoon at it.

Ling Heyu wasn’t home in the afternoon, so he ordered takeout and made do with that. At night, Yu Wei tossed and turned and finally couldn’t hold back anymore. He got up, put on a coat, and went downstairs.

After coming abroad, he didn’t dare get on the domestic internet, so after thinking it over, he went to find Ling Heyu.

He sent Ling Heyu and Shi Ciyan a message asking whether he was home, and after confirming that he was, he went out.

Ling Heyu must have just come out of the bathroom. He opened the door with water still dripping from his hair, leaned against the doorframe, and gave a wicked smile. “Little Yu-zhou, coming to find me this late, just the two of us? What do you want to do? A lone Alpha and a lone Omega, that doesn’t seem very appropriate~”

Yu Wei: “…”

Ling Heyu really would die if he went one day without being a jerk.

“Let me use your computer. I want to get on the domestic internet.”

Seeing that he didn’t answer, Ling Heyu shrugged and wasn’t embarrassed at all. He stepped aside to let him in. “Go to the study yourself. I’m going to shower.”

“You’re showering again?” Yu Wei glanced at him. He was soaking wet, clearly having just finished showering.

“I had just gotten my hair wet when you messaged me. I thought you had something important, so I came out first to open the door for you.”

“You were replying to messages while showering? You’re even on your phone in the shower?” Yu Wei clicked his tongue twice. “Dr. Ling, I didn’t expect you to be this hooked on your phone.”

Ling Heyu, who had expected to be moved: “…”

Forget it. A good Alpha didn’t fight with an Omega. He waved a hand and went into the bedroom, closing the door with a soft sound to show his displeasure.

But Yu Wei had no idea that his straight-man remarks had just broken some Alpha’s defenses. He went into the study and got on the domestic internet.

He typed in Lin Zerui’s name and clicked search. The page lagged for two seconds. Yu Wei stared blankly at the spinning little white flower, and after a few seconds, the images finally started to appear, as if they were being assembled from edited photos, the page displaying from top to bottom bit by bit.

Yu Wei stared at the screen full of mosaic censorship and froze.

“Fuck, Ling Heyu, your computer’s been infected with a virus.”

The more he thought about it, the more annoyed he got. He wanted to argue with him again, but when Ling Heyu came into the study and looked at the computer screen, his expression went blank too.

“You came to find me for the internet, just to look at porn?” Ling Heyu looked shocked. “Although, I guess it doesn’t have to be that open, coming over here and watching it so openly. And your tastes are pretty wild, liking multiple… people…”

At first glance, Yu Wei was as blank as he was. At the second glance, he spotted a familiar face in the “film,” and went even blanker.

“Or do you want to lean in and take another look?”

Ling Heyu hurriedly covered his eyes and shook his head. “I’m a pure person. I don’t watch that.”

Yu Wei was speechless. “You may not know him, but the main character in this film is my fiancé.” Remembering the noon call home, where the engagement had already been canceled, he corrected himself, “Ex-fiancé.”

Ling Heyu dropped his hands from his eyes and crouched down to stare at the screen, his mouth opening wider and wider until it was big enough to fit an egg. “Which one is your fiancé?”

“The one in the middle. And now he isn’t anymore. I have nothing to do with him.”

Ling Heyu was even more shocked. “Your fiancé wasn’t an Alpha? In this film… he’s the one getting it… Fuck, your ex… this Alpha actually likes that kind of thing.”

Yu Wei said he didn’t know either.

He had always thought Lin Zerui only liked preening, coquettish little Omegas. He hadn’t expected that he could be on the receiving end in bed. He really couldn’t believe it.

But the evidence was conclusive.

And it had been filmed and posted.

That was disgusting enough.

He closed the webpage and searched up the Lin family too. After what happened with Lin Zerui, the Lin company’s stock plunged, several media outlets reported on it, and the Lin family instantly came under an overwhelming amount of attention. Then it was discovered that the company had been evading taxes, that its finances were strained and its cash flow had broken down, that it was even selling counterfeit medicine, crimes piled on top of crimes, to the point where it was almost ready to announce bankruptcy.

The companies that had worked with them weren’t spared either. With such huge problems in the Lin family and their continued cooperation, they were seen as complicit and at risk of covering for wrongdoing, and they too suffered under public pressure, their stocks crashing.

Yu Wei looked for two hours and had already gone numb.

Ling Heyu, who had come out after showering, sat beside him and sprinkled salt on his wounds. “What kind of person did you fall for? Your taste is pretty average.”

It was naked mockery. But Yu Wei accepted it. Although the person had not been chosen by him.

“Yeah, a little bad.”

“Then you’ll have to keep your eyes open in the future and find a handsome, righteous Alpha.”

Yu Wei nodded perfunctorily and said casually, “Then may I ask where I’m supposed to find a handsome, righteous Alpha? In my dreams?”

Ling Heyu stroked his chin, pressed his fingers together, and mimicked a monk, making a few proper-looking gestures. “This humble monk pinches his fingers and calculates that this person is close at hand, yet far away.”

Yu Wei looked at him as if he were looking at an idiot. “Shameless. You’re talking in circles just to praise yourself.”
